At IMHOC, we understand that toddlers are magnificent little humans. The Montessori toddler program is developed for children between the ages of 18 months to about 3 years old. At this age, the child’s development is at a beautiful peak. With so much going on in their bodies and minds, our classrooms are prepared learning environments encouraging children to explore and grow. In doing so, we help the child to build a strong foundation to make them a successful and responsible person. In our toddler classroom, we begin lessons on grace and courtesy, both pinnacles of the Montessori philosophy. Grace and courtesy lessons focus on celebrating and respecting our differences while learning to be peaceful and kind to one another. We learn to push in our chairs and put away the materials we are using before starting something new. While the task of taking something out, working with it, and putting it away seems simple, it is a mighty feat for a toddler. We also learn to use walking feet, wash our hands, and how to be safe in our own bodies. Toddlers are learning to expand their language. Being in a social setting will help them learn a variety of words and practice early social and emotional skills. Studies have shown that children learn language faster from peers than from their parents, so our mixed-age toddler classroom is the ideal place for language exploration. Toddlers need the freedom to explore and experience the freedom to be the natural curious learner’s children of this age are. We dance, play, and sing. We read stories and parade around like zoo animals. We learn about all the exciting things the world has to offer.

The Montessori Primary Program offers a unique, authentic Montessori learning environment for children ages 3 to 6 years old. This age group is at the core of the IMHOC Montessori approach as it supports the idea that children from the age of birth to 6 years old are in a developmental period called the absorbent mind first discovered by Dr. Maria Montessori. During this time children are developing their physical and biological independence while their minds are eagerly learning by absorbing everything in their environment. Our Montessori teachers maximize the opportunity for learning by guiding our students to create a positive foundation through a carefully prepared and curated environment. The environment is strategically set up for their natural skills and abilities to flourish. Each child is encouraged to learn at their own pace, by allowing their individual interests to blossom. We focus on both direct and indirect learning, allowing children to use their hands for exploration. To a young child’s absorbent mind, this encouragement creates order, concentration, independence, and confidence in the learner.

In a Montessori school Kindergarten is the final year of study in the Primary classroom. The Primary curriculum for children ages 3 – 6 years old is integral in shaping and nurturing the inquisitive mind, moral character, and lifelong love of learning. The Primary curriculum, which requires 3 years of study to complete, develops the child’s mind in 4 main categories: Practical life, Sensorial Development, Language, and the Preparation of the Mathematical Mind. These categories encompass a diversity of subjects such as geography, culture, science, history, art, botany, and music, among others. Furthermore, by experiencing a mixed-aged classroom, kindergarteners have the opportunity to develop social and emotional capabilities that would not be possible if they were in a classroom with peers of their own age. As they learn to care for others younger than them, children develop a sense of responsibility, discipline, compassion, and solidarity.
