Primary Community (3 - 6 yrs)
On any given day in our Primary Community, ... ... you may see a 3 year old holding the colored pencil tight as she is learning to write her name, another child is sounding out with passion and conviction: "c" - "a" - " t" = "cat" and his friend is coloring a continent map. A 4 year old is walking through a labyrinth she has built with long red wooden rods, while her friend is finishing a landforms booklet. A 5 year old is researching the life cycle of a platypus. His friend has laid out the 1,000 chain and is joyfully skip-counting by tens. A child is giving a hug to a crying friend, who is missing her mom - offering a cup of water and a smile. Another child is at the easel mixing the colors of the rainbow while singing her favorite song: "Bluebonnet Montessori, where seeds of knowledge are sown .... this is our school where our hearts feel at home, together we leeeeeeeaaaaarn, together we grooooooooooow". Outside, under the generous shade of the live oaks, a group of kids are checking out the rocks in the garden for prehistoric fossils, while others are watering the cherry tomatoes and basil and rosemary.
Elementary Community (6 - 10 yrs)
Within the comfortable setting of the Elementary Classroom, ... ... a 6-year-old colors the flags of countries from around the world, while his friend researches the North American biome, focusing his attention on the fundamental needs of people through the centuries. A 7 year old uses a 3D model of an algebraic formula to solve an abstract problem; her friend draws a nautilus on his 12-foot-long timeline of life - he takes a quick break to look over the shoulder of his friend who is coloring a model of the Clock of Eras. An 8 year old is writes a story about life in a medieval castle, while two other friends are make sure that the 3D model of the oxygen molecule they have been working on all week has the proper number of protons and electrons. Another 8-year-old reuses a plastic bottle, a few lids and boxes to recreate a model of a water mill. The oldest child, a 9 year old, gives a lesson in long division to a 6-year-old. Outside, the adventures continue in the backyard as a group of kids observe the legs of a busy bee covered with heavy red pollen. Others peek in the watering can hanging on the fence - it has become the home of a mother finch and her 4 little eggs.
