Prek (3 - 5 yrs)
The Early Childhood Program at The Colorado Springs School is designed to meet the needs of the whole child, challenging and strengthening the social-emotional, physical, language, and cognitive skills of each student in a safe and nurturing environment. As active participants, young children learn best when they experience the world around them through a hands-on approach. It is our belief that children will confidently explore, take risks, and acquire problem-solving skills if given the opportunity to learn at their own pace. For this reason, individual interests and needs are incorporated into the overall lesson plans. We work with children and families to help develop life-long learning skills, a positive self-image, and acceptance of others. This partnership fosters a sense of belonging not only to a family but to our school community. Children's School (5 - 12 yrs)
Our rigorous curriculum is deepened by experiential learning in the classroom and beyond. While focused on core subjects of reading, writing, mathematics, science, and history, we also value co-curricular subjects such as band, computer science, music, Spanish, library, physical education, creative dramatics, and visual arts. Our teachers strive to bring hands-on experiences into everyday learning. Utilizing an integrated, interdisciplinary approach, dynamic Themes of Study immerse students in a particular subject area. These lessons build character, resilience, and independence and promote the ability for students to recognize, appreciate and accept the differences of others. Discover CSS and see for yourself how we prepare children for a dynamic world. Learn more at www.css.org/discover.
Middle School (12 - 13 yrs)
Our students are encouraged to broaden their academic horizons within a safe, supportive, and intellectually stimulating college preparatory environment. We generate curiosity through experiential learning and help students master the academic and organizational skills, and confidence necessary to succeed in college and beyond. Through small class sizes, interactive learning experiences, and a number of clubs and activities our students are able to bond with their teachers and peers quickly, and to develop friendships built to last. They have the opportunity to become leaders, to volunteer throughout the greater community, and to get to know both themselves and one another as independent thinkers and problem-solvers. At a critical time when these young learners are actively searching for meaningful answers to many of life's questions, we aim to provide the right vistas for positive development. Our students receive the mentorship they need along their path to self discovery. They learn more about the person they wish to become, get to know and understand their own personal strengths and challenges, and uncover new passions. The Middle School curriculum at CSS consists of modern and engaging content designed to help our students develop critical thinking, collaboration, and communication skills, as well as the creativity, ingenuity, and global awareness needed to inspire personal agency and to make ethical and responsible decisions. Whether reading and writing across all subjects, creating and testing data in math, science, and technology, or constructing a connected web of knowledge through art, literature and history, our programs build. This intricate structure provides students with the academic and interpersonal skills to succeed in our rigorous Upper School program, at the college of their choosing, and within the professional world. Upper School (13 yrs)
Here at CSS, faculty bring learning to life, as they present students with content that is both authentic and relevant, and prepares them to lead in our ever-changing world. Our rigorous curriculum includes a wide range of core and elective course offerings, Experience-Centered Seminars, mixed grade-level advisory groups, college counseling and social-emotional learning, which equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in college and beyond. Walking through the hallways of El Pomar, our Upper School building, you’ll see students creating, modeling, presenting, and taking ownership of their learning – whether playing an instrument in the Band, participating in a club such as Model United Nations, or conducting a lab experiment in a science class. CSS also offers a variety of Advanced Placement courses for students interested in completing college-level coursework. Regardless of their interests, there’s something for everyone in the Upper School at CSS. Beyond the classroom, students also experience growth through our sports programs and engage with others via a robust community service program and wide range of events. These activities add significant value to students’ overall high school experience, and provide authentic opportunities to practice the skills needed to function successfully and ethically in a dynamic world.
